WHAT ARE WE DOING?
i am tired of people on EBAY sending me SCRATCHED DISCS
I JUST WANT TO PLAY VIDEO GAMES!
i wonder if there is a way to test optical media thoroughly before selling it?
if any disc drive can read data, can't we just check for errors on a computer?
COMPACT DISC (CD-A , CD-ROM...)
THE BASICS
CDs are written/pressed in "blocks" (AKA sectors) of 2048 bytes.
This is the smallest amount of data it can store.
A laser shines a beam up, into the disc, and reads data being reflected back.
A decoder takes in this data...
Lasers ocassionally fail reading data due to dust, debris or scratches.
The decoder then employs an error correction mechanism to remedy above
Under our control, we can see exactly what's going on under the hood.
